This page is to provide conference speakers with information for the Learning from Detroit Conference.  You will receive an email 7-10 days prior to your arrival date confirming all details of your participation. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

 

Conference Information

 

When and where is the conference? The conference will be held May 30-31, 2014 at the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School, 915 E. Washington Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109.

 

What are the attendee demographics? 
We anticipate between 125-150 attendees. The majority of whom will be U-M faculty and graduate students. We also expect a small percentage of community members to attend the conference.

 

Special Requests/Hotel/Ground Transportation

 

Should speakers register for the conference?
 No.  We have already included you in the general count of attendees.

 

Special Requests/Dietary Restrictions. Please notify Lynne Shivers at [email protected] if you have any special requests or dietary restrictions. We will make every attempt to meet your request.

 

When will I know where I am staying? You will be notified by email 7-10 days before your arrival date of your hotel assignment, hotel confirmation number, and the number of nights we are covering. Additional nights will be your responsibility.  

 

Where is the hotel located? The hotels are within a short walking distance of the conference location.  They are situated near the heart of the campus where you will find restaurants, retail and convenience stores.

Arriving by Plane

For those flying in for the conference, we recommended that you select Detroit Metro airport as your destination. Ann Arbor is a 30-minute drive from the airport.

 

Ground Transportation. Speakers arriving at Detroit Metro Airport will be met by KHAN Ground Transportation service. Please meet the driver in the Baggage Claim area. He will be carrying a sign that says “Learning from Detroit Conference.” You do not have to tip the driver. We will cover tips in our cost to the company.

 

If you cannot find the driver, please call Muhummad Kahn at (734) 934-9348.

 

Driving Directions and Parking

There are several parking structures in the area, however many of them are dedicated to staff and student parking. We have made arrangements to cover your parking costs at the Palmer Drive Parking Structure.

 

Visitor Parking at Palmer Drive Structure

Speakers parking in this structure will receive a voucher to cover parking fees. If you informed us you want a parking tag we will mail it to you before the conference. If you did not inform us, please be sure to get your voucher from us before you leave for the day. If you are not a speaker and want to park here, the cost is $0.70 per hour. This structure is the closest to the conference location, Rackham Graduate School, located at 915 E. Washington Street.


Driving Directions to Palmer Drive Parking Structure and getting to the conference location:

From East: from I-94 exit at State Street (exit 177) (approx. 25 miles from Detroit Metro Airport); go north on State, which will take you into campus. Rackham Graduate School can be reached by continuing north on State Street and turning right on Washington. It will be on the left, just before Fletcher Street.


From North: US-23 to Business M-14 (Main Street). Take Main Street to Huron Street. Turn left (east) on Huron. Turn right on State Street. To reach Rackham from Huron and State, take a right onto State (south), and then turn left (east) on E. Washington. Rackham is on the left, just before Fletcher Street.

From West: From I-94, exit at Jackson Road (172), which becomes Huron Street as you travel east. Continue east on Huron. Take a right onto State (south), and then turn left (east) on E. Washington. Rackham is on the left, just before Fletcher Street.


From South: US-23 to Washtenaw Avenue West exit (exit 37B). After you travel approximately 2-3 miles, there is a fork in the road, splitting into Stadium Blvd and Washtenaw Ave. Stay to the right to continue on Washtenaw. Keep following Washtenaw, which will eventually curve to the left and become E. Huron Street. Take Huron Street to Fletcher Street. Turn left onto Fletcher. Then take your first right, which is Washington Street. Rackham is the large building on your right.

 

Street Parking

Metered parking is available on the street in front of Rackham.  Bring plenty of change!

 

AV Equipment

What equipment is in the rooms? The following is considered standard equipment, and will be provided in each breakout room:

  • Computer, LCD projector & screen
  • Smaller breakout rooms will not need a sound system.  Larger rooms will also
       have a podium and microphone
  • Wireless internet

Session Evaluations

Will my session be evaluated by attendees?
 The planning committee is deciding how the sessions will  be evaluated. If there is a speaker evaluation, criteria may include:

  • Speaker knowledge about the topic
  • Speaker speaking skills and ability to convey it clearly
  • Likelihood of attendee recommending speaker to peers

 

Onsite Information

First day: Friday, May 30, 2014 registration opens at 8:00AM on the 4th floor of Rackham Graduate School. Second day Saturday, May 31, 2014 registration opens at 8:00 AM on the 4th floor of Rackham Graduate School. Conference staff will be onsite as early as 7:00 AM if you want to arrive early.

 

Is there a dress code? 
Business attire is the preferred dress of conference attendees.

 

Where do we check-in once we arrive at Rackham? 
When you arrive at Rackham, please go to the registration area and check-in at the speaker check-in area . You will be able to pick up registration materials and receive any last minute instructions.

 

Time on your own

Other than the private dinner for speakers and special guests on Friday at 6:30PM, there are no other planned activities outside of the conference.

 

Weather in Ann Arbor

Average temperatures in May are in the mid-70s.  It is recommended that you bring a light jacket, as evenings are typically cooler.
